So it seems BET is trying 'to do better' by renaming their highly anticipated and already criticized show, Hot Ghetto Mess to "We Got To Do Better".
I just happened to be watching BET this weekend and caught their commercial promoting the premiere of "We Got To Do Better" on Wednesday, July 25th at 10:30 PM EDT. It took no time for me to figure out what BET had done.
Originally the show was entitled, Hot Ghetto Mess with the motto slogan reading 'We Got To Do Better' (as seen above). As recently reported here, advertisers began pulling from the 1/2 show after finding issues with the content. (The content..not the title!)
And while there are no mentions on whether the content of the show has been revised any, BET's entertainment head, Reginald Hudlin, had this to say to the critics:
"The intent of the show is no different than what Bill Cosby is doing as he's going across the country and lecturing as he talks about the problems of the (black) community that we need to address."
Hudlin stop it! You are really starting to insult our intelligence now.
You know damn well that getting black folks to address problems in the community was not the original intentions of BET when bringing this show to fruition. BET thought this show would be a hit simply because the website is the rave in the black community. And furthermore, I'm sure that Cosby would agree that BET is a part of the very same problems faced by the black community that needs to be addressed.
BET needs to realize that while the website, hotghettomess.com, works for the internet forum, we (black viewers) expect or rather demand more creativity by way of TV.
Especially, when it is 'Black On TV'.

Thanks for updating us. I agree, BET is most definitely insulting our intelligence. It all boils down to their preaching one thing and doing the other. They stress empowerment and tear the community down with a few tasteless programs. Guess that's why I find myself tuned to TV One more and more regular. Thanks again.
