BET 'Does Better' With S.O.B.

Last night BET premiered 'S.O.B.' and, the most talked about show amongst black folks at your job's water cooler, 'We Got To Do Better'.

S.O.B., hosted by D.L. Hughley was very funny! Kudos to BET on pulling together this hilarious yet insightful modern day version of Candid Camera. While this episode featured black people put in very racially offensive situations it was their reactions secretly caught on camera that provided all the laughs. I could not stop laughing at the various sisters reactions when their Asian pedicurist tells them they have "baboon feet". And wasn't that VH-1's Charm School winner, Saaphyri, in one of those skits set in the restaurant?

Anyhoo....

Each skits wrap-up with the victim of these pranks being interviewed about their reactions. Here is where it gets insightful, as we learn why people do what they do when put in the mix of socially offensive behavior.

And now that 'We Got To Do Better' formerly known as 'Hot Ghetto Mess' has finally aired, we, Black America, can speak on it. Simply put, I did not like it. This is a black version of VH-1's Web Junk and that show did very little for me as well.

BET Founder, Bob Johnson recently had this to say about this whole 'mess':

"As far as the 'Hot Ghetto Mess' issue, [BET President/CEO Debra Lee] has got the same problem that I had in that BET, for all practical purposes, is the only preeminent voice for African Americans in media and because of that it is given a greater responsibility and obligation by certain people that BET has to be a little bit 'holier than thou,'" Johnson said. "We'll let Jerry Springer get away with that or we'll let Morton Downey get away with that or we'll let the people at VH1's 'Flavor of Love' get away with that. But when it's black folks making the decision to do that, all of a sudden people start saying you can't do that because you have a greater obligation...."

as well this:

"All of a sudden, creative people who want to tell stories or produce shows like 'Hot Ghetto Mess' are saying, 'I don't want to work on BET because they can't doing anything that's innovative or pushes the envelope," he said. "I think that would be detrimental to creativity. I think it would be detrimental to the black community in allowing us to mature and let a lot of voices be heard."

I've said it before and I will say it again. Not all things internet are made for TV.
