ABC Has Thursday Nights On Lock

Last night, I watched Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy and Big Shots and I have come to the conclusion that ABC is the place to be on Thursday nights.


Ugly Betty easily gets my vote for the best dramedy (drama/comedy) season premiere this Fall. Last night's episode had one of the best one liners I have heard on television in a long time:

"I'm black and you're hispanic so let's not beat around the bush like a couple of dull white people."

Wilhelmina (Vanessa Williams) told this to Betty (America Ferrera) as she was about to bribe her into keeping her mouth shut after discovering she's been sleeping with her bodyguard (played by Williams' ex hubby, Rick Fox) behind Bradford Meade's (Alan Dale) back.

That line had me cracking up!

After Ugly Betty follows Grey's Anatomy. This show holds the No. 2 spot for the best dramedy season premiere in my opinion. As mentioned before [click here], last night's episode entitled 'Love Addiction' guest starred Ben Vereen who winds up in the hospital when suffering burns after a home explosion at his white neighbors' home. Turns out his neighbors were cooking the drug crystal meth which caused the explosion. Diahann Carroll also made a return appearance as Burke's mother confronting Cristina (Sandra Oh) for the first time since Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) left her at the altar.

I have to give it to the writers of this show. They impress me from week to week with how they are able to tie everyone's story, patients included, together in a one hour episode. And with as many black people on the show I sometimes feels this could easily be about Harlem Hospital. Well...maybe not. But kudos to ABC and Shonda Rhimes for keeping it real.

Last week, I was drawn to Big Shots, large in part because of Nia Long [click here]. I enjoyed the series premiere enough to give it a second watch. While it's no Desperate Housewives, the show is still entertaining and makes for good TV. And Nia Long isn't the only black face to make the show. Playing a 'trannie' named Dantrell, Jazzmum, played a major role in both the premiere and last night's episode. Hey...don't knock the role. This could have easily been a white 'trannie'.

29 New Season Premieres This Fall...Are Any Of Them Black?

Monday officially kicks off the Fall new season as the three major networks (CBS, NBC and ABC) will debut their new show line-up.

As reported in today's New York Post, we, the viewers, can expect 29 new shows this Fall. My only questions is...are any of these shows black?

I have to admit I am surprised at these networks. What happened to NBC which used to air shows like, 'The Cosby Show' and 'A Different World'?

I remember back in the 80's black people coined the term 'Negro Broadcasting Corporation' when referring to NBC.

But NBC is not the only one to blame here. CBS, home of the mid 70's to early 80's hit, The Jeffesons, seems to have not taken a chance on a black sitcom since.


At least ABC, just a year or so ago, gave us My Wife and Kids.

Then there is UPN who last year handed over it's 'black' Monday nights over to CW11 which have since crashed 'All Of Us'. To date, I have yet to watch UPN and no word yet on any new black show to replace 'All of Us'.

So what's going on here? Are there not enough good black shows being pitched to the networks? Or are we no longer considered 'in' or funny enough for primetime on one of the three major networks. What do you think? And if there is a black show due to come out next week that I have not heard about, please enlighten me.

Once 'Lost' Now Found: Harold Perrineau

According to the New York Post, Harold Perrineau will be returning to ABC's 'Lost' in his role as Michael for the series's fourth season.

Perrineau left the show in 2006 after the second season for a TV pilot that never saw the light of day. He then went back to 'Lost' producers about returning to the show however requesting the same salary that was offered for a season 3 return. Producers apparently refused.

Perrineau must have realized the unemployment line is not fun and decided to take whatever ABC was willing to offer this go round.

You can watch Lost on ABC this Fall but I have a funny feeling this will be the last season. I never got into this show but apparently ratings have dropped due to folks not feeling the storyline as of late.
